As a suburb of Columbia, the town of Lexington, SC, serves as the seat of Lexington County. It covers a land area of 8.7 square miles, home to a population of more than 21,000 people under the motto, “Town of Progress.”
Local farms and the lumber industry helped stabilize Lexington’s economy in the late 19th century. Further growth came with the Columbia to Augusta Railroad, as well as the Lexington Textile Mill. Many brick buildings that still stand were built after devastating fires in 1894 and 1916. Today, several structures in Lexington are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the William Berly House, the James Harman Building and the Lexington County Courthouse. The town maintains three public parks, a county museum and a creek trail.
