The town of Batesburg-Leesville, SC, stretches across Lexington and Saluda Counties, about 30 miles west of Columbia along U.S. Route 1. Batesburg-Leesville covers a land area of 7.3 square miles, home to a population of roughly 5,500 people.
Nicknamed “B-L” and “The Twin Cities,” the town was formed in 1992 by the consolidation of Batesburg and Leesville, under a council-manager style government. Two large poultry processing plants operate in the area— Amick Farms and Columbia Farms— making Lexington County the state’s top poultry producing region. The annual South Carolina Poultry Festival is held here on the second Saturday in May, featuring live music, vendors, a carnival and a parade. A number of local structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Cartledge House and Cedar Grove Lutheran Church.
