West Columbia, SC
The city of West Columbia, SC, is a commuter town in suburban Lexington County, as well as part of the Greater Columbia metropolitan area. West Columbia covers just over six square miles of land on the west side of the Congaree River, home to a population of roughly 16,000 people.
The community was incorporated in 1894 as a town by the name of Brookland. In 1936 the name was changed to West Columbia to emphasize its proximity to neighboring Columbia. Still to this day, many businesses, churches and a high school retain the Brookland name. West Columbia is located close to Columbia’s downtown district, the South Carolina State House, and the Congaree Vista, a revitalized area with many upscale shops and restaurants.
